I have a lifetime bring back option on all my dogs and want to ensure that they are going to permanent loving homes where much thought and consideration has gone into bringing home a new family member with regard to how much time and attention and commitment you really have for a new puppy in your life and I want to be assured that you are prepared to care for the dog for his or her whole life including the senior years.
Name of prospective buyer/s:
Address of prospective buyer/s:
Phone number of prospective buyer/s including area code:
May I call you to talk about any issues if necessary? When is a good time for you to talk?
Working email address of prospective buyer/s:
Please tell me your preference of gender of the puppy:
What season and year do you want a puppy? Please let me know when you would
like to receive a new puppy into your home (puppies usually can leave at eight weeks).
Please tell me about yourself or your family:
Westies are not recommended for younger children – the books generally say age eight and up. I do not have a problem placing a puppy with younger children on the understanding that no dog, whatever the breed, should be left unsupervised with a young child. Only once the child is old enough to have superior dog etiquette and the respect of the dog should they be trusted alone together. I understand that the parent or guardian is the best judge of his child's suitability.
Please note that I do not discriminate against people due to age*, race, physical handicap, sexual orientation or religious affiliation/non-affiliation and neither do my puppies :-)
Please let me know how many members are in your family or how many people live with you and the ages.
Are all members of your household in agreement of the decision to bring a new puppy into the home?
Please tell me about the current non-human members of your family:
Please give me the breed/s of dogs you currently own their age/s and sex. Please let me know if you have cat/s or other house pets. Are you aware that terriers have high prey drive?
Previous dog ownership. Please tell me if you have ever owned a dog or dogs before. How long did the dog/s live? What was the cause of death?
Have you ever given away or sold a dog that you have owned? If so, why?
Do you understand that a Westie is not an outdoor dog? A Westie is a companion pet and expects to be treated as a member of your family. Do you agree that your Westie will not be kept outdoors running free or kept on a chain?
How many hours per day do you expect your dog to be left alone?
Do you have legal permission to own a new dog? I require that you either own your own home or have written permission by your landlord to bring a puppy into your home. Some cities have restrictions on the number of dogs you may own – have you checked into your local by-laws including licensing? Please let me know that you have met these conditions or are willing to.
Exercise and Bathroom Breaks. Do you have a fenced yard? If you live in an apartment how do you intend to exercise your dog and how will you allow it to relive itself?
Have you housetrained a puppy before? If not, how do you intend to housetrained your new puppy? How will the puppy be confined when unsupervised in order not to cause damage to your home or his or herself?
Do you have a plan to obedience train your puppy?
Do you currently have a veterinarian? If not have you enquired to find out if your local veterinarian is taking new clients or asked how long you have to wait for a typical check-up appointment?
Medical Costs Do you understand that regular veterinary care is required? You need to take your puppy to the vet for a series of booster shots and then a spay/neuter operation. After this you will need to visit the vet annually for booster shots and a health check up. Should kenneling be required during your vacation a kennel cough shot will be required; these are only good for six months. An accident or a lengthy illness can be very expensive if surgery or long-term medication is required. Do you have funds available for unexpected or long-term health care or a pet health insurance plan in place? (Pet insurance plans do not cover pre-existing conditions). Can you tell me that you are financially prepared for regular and unplanned vet costs?
Have you researched the breed? Have you educated yourself about the common shortcomings and foibles of the West Highland White Terrier? Are you aware of the known health problems associated with this breed?
Returns. Should you need to give up your dog at anytime in the future do you agree that the dog MUST be returned to the breeder or be adopted by a home that the breeder approves? Will the executer of your will be informed of our agreement if you have not made other provisions your pet/s? Do you have a suitable family member or friend written in your will to inherit your beloved pet/s?
Keeping in touch. Do you agree to tell the breeder of any unusual health problems in your dog in order that the breeder can determine with veterinary council if either or both parents should be removed from the breeding program for the betterment of the breed? Do you agree to keep the breeder informed of any change of contact information you may have over the life of the dog in order that the breeder may keep you informed of any medical situations within the line you should be aware of?
Spaying/Neutering: Do you understand that all companion puppies are sold on a strict CKC non-breeding contract. All puppies before eight months old.
What is it that appeals to you about adding a Westie to your family?
