AIR SHIPPING MAY BE AVAILABLE - Valleyview is about five hours northwest of Edmonton. This is nice day out driving in the country, if you are from Edmonton with the advantage of getting chance to meet the parents of the puppy.
It is the breeder's preference and It is much nicer for the puppy to be picked up from our home. If he or she is going to be shipped I keep the puppy for a few extra weeks and slowly get the puppy used to being in a shipping crate.
However, with the price of gas being high and free time at a premium for most working people, I do offer shipping by air from Grande Prairie to both Edmonton and Calgary airports through AirCanada for $87.00+GST. A specific size crate is needed (aprox $56.45 plus tax) – but the buyer gets to keep the crate. I can ship to Regina for $115, Toronto $135* - please inquire about this option for your closest airport.
Please note that I only charge what AirCanada actually charges plus $125 for the shipping crate and to help cover the cost of gas (airport is 120km away), and the extra mailing costs to ship binder and book by Canada Post as they can not be attached to cage. I do not charge for my time, airport shipping takes about five hours for me because of the requirment to be at the airport two hours early - I stay with the puppy up until the last few minutes so that I can take him or her out to for an excercise/pee break. (NB: If the flight is over 4 hours an additional fee of $15 will be charged to cover costs for special dog crate waterer.)
* Air Canada prices as of June/06 - will pass on cost of their current price at the time of sale.
PLEASE NOTE that air shipping may not be availalable in the winter months - it would all depend on the size of the airplane. Sometimes it may take a week or two to find a place on an ariplane. If air shipping is required then we need to give the airline as much notice as possible.
This is from the Air Canada website: Smaller aircraft types - CRJ and CR7 cannot offer adequate comfort during colder Winter months. On these aircrafts, all pets cannot be accepted between November 1 and March 31, and or any other time the temperature is below zero Celsius.
This is what I was told by email: "There is an embargo on all live cargo from December 19th till January 06th. Other than that it should be possible to send animals out of Grand Prairie from November1 and March 31st. depending on the type of Aircraft operation."
FAQ
Should I get a second dog?
Advantages of owning TWO dogs:
More exercise as dogs chase each other around and play together.
Company for the each other when left alone - genuine affection for each
other.
Fun of watching animals interact with each other - terriers can be so fun to
watch tugging on a toy and hiding and jumping on each other providing hours
of entertainment.
Advantages of owning ONE dog:
More socially acceptable - a neighbour wouldn't mind if a person brought one
well-behaved dog over to a bbq for instance.
The dog is more in tune with the human family and more likely to be obedient
because the other dog does not distract him.
Time and costs - everything is doubled two coats to brush out, two annual
check ups at the vet (probably not at the same time) twice the kibble, twice
the amount of poop to pick up in the garden etc.
Easier to walk one dog on a leash.
Will the puppy get along with my cat?
My puppies have NOT been socialized with cats. If would be best if you could find a breeder who also had cats in the house. If you decide you want a pup from me it would be best to get one as young as possible and closely monitor the relationship. A full-grown terrier could kill a cat. Terriers love the thrill of the chase and so it would be better if the cat were used to dogs and unafraid. A cat could also do serious harm to a young pup such as scratching an eye – it wouldn’t hurt to keep both the cat’s nails and the pup’s nails trimmed as their relationship develops.
Should I choose a same-sex terrier as a companion for my present terrier?
There is a high rate of same-sex aggression in terriers. This can be reduced if both dogs were spayed or neutered at an early age.
It would be best to choose a dog of the opposite sex as a companion for your terrier or choose a dog from one of the milder personality groups such as the hounds.
