Gemma with pups at five days old - puppies are thriving; getting plump. Very wiggly little pups indeed.
Please note that the CKC pedigrees only show Canadian championships. The four on Lewis' side will not show because they are American and the titles on Gemma's side are English, Hungarian, Russian, French, Danish etc. so they too will not show on the puppy's pedigree. Please scroll down this page to view the Hungarian Kennel Club (which does show all European titles regardless of the country) and the AKC pedigrees of Gemma and Lewis. You can Google many of the ancestors to see photos!
Happy Easter
pups at two weeks old
At three weeks old the pups have their eyes open - the transformation started on Tuesday and by Wednesday they were fully open. This week they had their first toenail trims. They are a wiggly bunch! I had to take over 40 photos to try to get four suitable three week old photos. They are not very cuddly as of yet but do try to get to you as fast as they can walk/drag themselves. The boy is the biggest is is a gorgeous pup. The second and third pups are similar in size and the fourth pup is a little bit slighter in size. They are a nice looking litter of pups. Gemma is doing really well - she will leave her pups for ten minutes at a time these days, but won't let any other dog go near them.
The puppies at three and a half weeks.
I find it amazing that a baby from
another species, will run to a human
being and wag his or her tail at
such a young age. This week the
babies turned into 'real dogs'.
They have started on a small amount
of dog food and are getting more
playtimes outside of their 'nest'.

The puppies get their first full bath. With there only being four pups it has been relatively easy to keep their pen clean up until this past week; only a little spot cleaning was in order. I think with Westies it is a good idea not to over bathe as they are prone to skin problems – it is extremely important to rinse all the shampoo out. Oftentimes with the older dogs, most of the dirt will brush out easily when dry or even come out in the bedding by itself.
I have been sprucing up the adult Westies a little too – not full hair cuts - but a little trimming around the ears and necks to keep them looking like Westies instead of snowballs. Like most of the residents of Northern Alberta, we were a little shocked at the amount of late snowfall in this week's storm. The Westies loved it and were rolling around in it.
I needed to buy some new nail clippers because my good ones were lost. I bought a replacement pair at our local Valleyview Feed Mart. I have never owned such a fantastic pair of cutters – they cut through nails like butter. The brand name is “Original Mars Solingen” and they are marked Rosteret Stainless Germany. These are better even than the ones I bought at the vets. Terriers generally don’t like getting their nails cut so being able to do the job fast smooth is a great boon. (I use cat nail clippers on my puppies up to about 16 weeks).
All is well in puppy world. The Valleyview Vet, Dr. Huber, is not opening her office until June but when I phoned they said they were willing to come out to our house to do shots and exams. I have been very happy with the vet service in High Prairie but it is about a two hour round trip so I am very happy that Valleyview has local vet service once again.
